Battle of Iwo Jima approaches 70

A Japanese coastal ship-mounted gun is emplaced at the base of Mount Suribachi on Iwo To, Japan. Two days preceding the battle of Iwo Jima, a Japanese crew fired a similar gun at an approaching U.S. ship, causing a chain reaction of preemptive strikes. This gave away the positions of several other defensive positions, leading to the early destruction of about a dozen similar guns. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class John Linzmeier)
