At about 7 a.m. today, Kadena Air Base, Torii Station, and Okinawa City fire departments responded to a fire in a rural area outside Gate 3. It is believed that a debris pile was the source of the fire. The fire is contained in a 50-by-20 foot area. There were no injuries, casualties or structural damage reported. Veteran weapons loader finishes 28-year career where it all began

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- Senior Master Sgt. Robert Meyer, 67th Aircraft Maintenance Unit's assistant superintendent, took one last opportunity to mentor his unit's newest Airmen like Airman 1st Class Erik Schmidt (left) before retiring Sept. 18. Sergeant Meyer spent more than 17 years of his career at Kadena. "I love the people here and I love the island," he said shortly after completing his final weapons load on an F-15 that was here when he first arrived as an airman basic in 1982. "The local community has always been very welcoming and Kadena is an awesome place to raise kids." (Air Force/Staff Sgt. Jason Lake)

Veteran weapons loader finishes 28-year career where it all began

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- Airmen 1st Class Erik Schmidt and Thai Thatch, 67th Aircraft Maintenance Unit weapons loaders, help Senior Master Sgt. Robert Meyer, 67th AMU assistant superintendent, load an AIM-9 Sidewinder missile on an F-15 Eagle Sept. 18. After 28 years of service, Sergeant Meyer closed out his Air Force career with one final weapons load on an F-15 that was here when he was assigned at Kadena as an airman basic in 1982.
