With the hustle and bustle of everyday life here on Okinawa, a vehicle can add some ease to a busy schedule.

Along with routine maintenance, it's important that military members and their families remember to keep their Japanese Compulsory Insurance (JCI), road tax and insurance up to date.

Every two years, vehicles must pass an inspection with the average cost of $300 to $800. This inspection includes the JCI, which is the Japanese equivalent of liability insurances. A sticker located on the car windshield indicates when the next inspection is needed.

"If a driver is caught operating a vehicle with expired JCI or insurance greater than 5 days and/or the Road Tax is not paid, the driver will have to surrender their keys," said Tech. Sgt. Lauren Berger, 18th Security Forces operations support. "The vehicle will then be impounded at Camp Kinser."

Not only does a vehicle need JCI, but it also must be covered by "American insurance" with rates depending on the driver's age and rank.

Insurance firms can be found both on and off base. On Kadena you may purchase insurance at the USO, next to Gate 2.

For any questions concerning vehicle operations, inspections or insurance, the Joint Services Vehicle Registration Office located on Camp Foster can answer any questions.
