Operation Tomodachi: A Decade of Unwavering Friendship
Kadena Air Base-10 years ago, on March 11, 2011, a huge 33-foot tsunami struck the coast of Honshu, Japan, following a 9.0 magnitude earthquake. Following the disaster, the Japanese government requested assistance from the United States, and Kadena Air Base was immediately ready for response.
Shortly after the earthquake and tsunami, an explosion with radioactive material occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. In a series of events, more than 15,000 people were killed and thousands were injured or missing. Operation Tomodachi, a joint humanitarian aid activity between Japan and the United States, has begun to support the Japanese and US military bases in Japan.
