An extra $40 a month for a young military member could be a cheap television when arriving on island, or outfits for children while waiting for the Transportation Management Office to bring household goods.

The Thrift Store Buck program, sponsored by Kadena Enlisted Spouse Club Thrift Store and Uncle Sam's Attic, also known as the Airmen's Attic, supports the junior enlisted military members of all branches.

Throughout Okinawa, E-4s and below without children can receive $40 vouchers, and those with children can receive $80 vouchers on a monthly basis.

Members can go to building 859 with their Leave and Earning Statement and fill out a form to enroll in the program and receive a stamp card-type voucher.

"When I go through the gate sometimes I'll hand out my card and say, 'hey, look on the back of this if you want free stuff,'" said Mary Loa-Jimenez, manager of Uncle Sam's Attic.

Loa-Jimenez encourages Airmen in the program and supervisors who are aware of the program to share information with others who made need help making ends meet.

"If you are a Thrift Store Buck recipient, and someone new to your command comes in, let them know," she said. "That's the best word, is word of mouth, and not just advertising."
