Kadena Joint Services Tax Center to provide free federal and state tax services beginning Jan. 30 Published Jan. 24, 2012 18th Wing Public Affairs KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- The Joint Services Tax Center on Kadena provides free federal and state tax services beginning Jan. 30. The tax center will be open to all Department of Defense ID card holders Jan. 30 through Feb. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., walk-in service only. Taxpayers with rental properties and family child care providers will need to schedule an appointment. After Feb. 3, walk-in hours will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Saturdays are by appointment only from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for all eligible taxpayers. The tax center is open to all active duty service members, Department of Defense civilians, Status of Forces Agreement-status contractors and Department of Defense Dependent School teachers as well as their families on Okinawa. Elaine Reeves, KJSTC chief tax advisor, said though some may decide to do their tax returns using online programs from home, there is an advantage to using the tax center instead. "People like to file their federal online before we actually open, but a lot of times though the federal may be free, they have to pay for the state," said Reeves. "But if we didn't prepare your federal return, we can't do your state. We can do both - both are free, and we can electronically file both." Because of the limited resources and time for individual appointments, the tax center requests that people using the services print and bring all important documents beforehand, including bank information. Reeves advised individuals who plan to use the tax center to download and fill out the Intake/Interview and Quality Review Sheet to quicken the check-in process.
