Brig. Gen. Matt H. Molloy assumed command of the 18th Wing during a change of command ceremony at Kadena Air Base, Japan June 3.

Lt. Gen. Burton M. Field, U.S. Forces, Japan and 5th Air Force commander, presided over the event held inside Kadena's Airborne Warning and Control System hangar where Airmen, soldiers, sailors, Marines, distinguished guests and members of the Okinawan community attended the ceremony.

"If there are two words today that capture my feelings, they would be blessed and grateful," General Molloy said. "I am blessed by the Lord for this opportunity to command and grateful to do this service in the 18th Wing alongside the Shogun Warriors who are the guardians of the Pacific."

General Molloy is taking the position from Brig. Gen. Ken S. Wilsbach, who has been selected for the position of deputy director for operations, Headquarters, United States Pacific Command, Camp H. M. Smith, Hawaii. General Wilsbach served as commander here from July 2009 until the ceremony today.

"I feel so blessed to have been the 18th Wing commander," General Wilsbach said. "It has been an incredible journey and I am so thankful for the opportunity. Cindy and I have grown to love the Airmen, soldiers, sailors, Marines and their families of Team Kadena. It's hard to say goodbye.

"Kadena Air Base is a special place," the former wing commander continued. "The winning culture [of Kadena] is what [Cindy and I] will remember the most. This culture is true for the military members, civilians and families as well. Being on a winning team is a lot of fun, and sure it's a lot of work, but it's certainly worth it."

After the passing of the guidon tradition, General Molloy addressed his new family, Team Kadena, and shared his excitement for his new position and his vision for his upcoming years in command.

"I think the only really important message the new commander brings to his change of command ceremony is his priorities, and mine are quite simple - mission first and people always," he said. "The mission is job number one and when we focus on the mission, everything else becomes crystal clear."

General Molloy most recently served as the commander of the 1st Fighter Wing, Joint Base Langley-Eustis Va., and has more than 3,200 flying hours in the F-15 Eagle and F-22 Raptor. He also served as the chief of wing safety and the director of operations, 67th and 44th Fighter Squadron commander here from October 2000 to June 2004.

"In short, the 18th Wing mission represents the heart and soul of the Air Force mission," General Molloy said. "I stand before America's finest and I clearly understand my role as commander. I will provide for you the guidance, tools and top cover you need to get the job done while fostering an environment that is fueled by integrity, service, and excellence--our service core values. I will also strive to make this the best assignment you have ever had.

"To the Shogun Warriors, thanks again for the warm welcome," he continued. "It will be an honor and privilege to once again serve alongside you."
