University of Maryland University College Spring Intensive Session
University of Maryland University College has a Spring Intensive Session beginning on Feb. 7. Many of the classes can apply three credits towards a CCAF degree, and they are only five to six weeks long. Tuition rates are $190 per credit. If you were unable to register for Spring Session 1, this intensive session is a great opportunity for you to further your education.

To register for the class or to see what classes will be available, sign in at http://my.umuc.edu then click "My Academic"-> "Registration/Enrollment" -> "2011 Spring."

18th Medical Group closure
The 18th Medical Group will be closed Feb. 7 for the Wing down-day, Feb. 17 from 12:00 to 4:30p.m. for readiness training, and Feb. 21 in observance of the federal holiday.

In case of emergency, please call 911 on-base, 119 off-base, 098-934-5911 from a cell phone, or go directly to the U.S. Naval Hospital Emergency Department. For after hours acute medical or dental needs, for medical, please call the Okinawa Clinical Answering Service (OCAS) at 643-4245, or 098-970-5555 then dial 643-4245 (off base or using cell phone), and for dental, call the provider on call at 080-2721-0412 or 639-2324.

AFSA Chapter Executive Council & Trustee Nominations and Elections
Chapter 1553 is looking for nominations for its 2011-2012 council. It's open to all Air Force active duty service members and retirees. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 31. Elections will take place mid-February.

Soccer referee certification
Take the three-day soccer referee certification course with the Ryukyu International Soccer Association to become a certified U.S. Soccer Federation referee and be able to referee all on-base soccer games and earn extra income. No soccer experience is required.

The course dates are Feb. 4 from 6-9 p.m. and Feb. 5-6 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is a $20 registration fee to attend.

AFSA scholarship opportunities
The Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) and the Airmen Memorial Foundation (AMF) joined together to conduct a scholarship program to financially assist the undergraduate studies of eligible, dependent children of the Total Air Force which includes Air Force Active Duty, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve Command enlisted members in active duty, retired, or veteran status.

For award winners attending accredited academic institutions, AFSA scholarships can range from $500 to $3,000. You can view all the available scholarships as well as access the application by visiting www.afsahq.org. On the main page, click on the "About" tab and click on the "Scholarships" link.

Completed application packages with all required documents can be sent to AFSA Headquarters between Jan. 1 and March 31.

Legal Office notary hour changes
The legal office will be changing its notary hours on Tuesdays. The new time frame for powers of attorney and notaries are Mon., Wed., Thu. and Fri. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

OSI seeks special agent candidates
Join us during the monthly recruitment meetings held the last Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. in the OSI Detachment 624, Bldg 705, on Kadena. For specifics on eligibility and how to apply, contact your local OSI Detachment at 634-5165 or visit www.osi.andrews.af.mil.

Erwin PME Center instructor positions available
The Erwin PME Center is currently hiring for two technical sergeant instructor positions. Interested technical sergeants need to volunteer by Feb. 15 and be able to report no later than September. If selected, the individual must be able to attend Enlisted PME Instructor Course at Maxwell AFB/ Gunter Annex Sept. 7 through Oct. 4. Applicants need not apply through AMS. All applications can be sent to Senior Master Sgt. Chacon or Master Sgt. Geoff Robertson.

Tony Horton 'meet and greet'
Tony Horton, training guru to the stars and developer of the fitness program P90X, will be visiting Kadena Air Base Jan. 29. Mr. Horton will be at Kadena's Risner Fitness Center from 7-8 a.m. for an exercise clinic and from 8-8:30 a.m. to meet, greet, and sign autographs. He will then visit AAFES Bookmark inside Kadena's Base Exchange from 5-6 p.m. for a book-signing.

Honor Guard Training Flight
Orientation for the next Honor Guard Training Flight (T-Flight) will be held at the McDaniel Center, Feb. 2 at 3:30 p.m. T-Flight will commence the day following, from Feb. 3-17. We're excited about training potential new members. Our goal is to host a T-Flight quarterly to keep up with PCSs and the high volume of deployments.

If for whatever reason prospective members are unable to attend training this time around, they're still encouraged to attend orientation for a better understanding of what Kadena HG is all about.

USO Montgomery Gentry Concert and 'meet and greet'
The Montgomery Gentry concert sponsored by the Uniformed Service Organization will be held Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Marine Hangar, Building 762.

The band will also be having a 'meet and greet' with fans at the Kadena USO at 11 a.m. and at Building 3534 at 2 p.m.

As a reminder, no personal cameras will be permitted for photos during the meet and greet - no exceptions, and no audio or video recording will be permitted during the concert. Also, no alcohol or glass will be permitted during the show.

'Okinawan First' Vendor Showcase
18th CONS in conjunction with a Government of Japan sponsored corporation is hosting a vendor showcase from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Shilling Community Center. Thirty companies from the local community will be featuring their products at the show. Come out and review all the products available to your squadron/unit that could save both time and money.

KDHS basketball team car wash
KDHS boys varsity basketball team is hosting a car wash Jan. 29, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Chapel 2 located next to the Kadena base library across from the school age center. There will be refreshments available along with a basketball shooting station for the kids.

U.S. dollars and yen donations are welcome. All proceeds are to support the team's travel, supplies, and tournament entry fees. Please come by and support the Panthers!

AFSA monthly meeting
The AFSA monthly meeting will be held Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. in the Kuba Room at the Rocker NCO Club. The meeting is open to all active duty and retirees. Please join us to hear what AFSA is doing for you.

Quality Assurance personnel training

KDHS Madrigal Dinner tickets on sale
The Kadena High School Choral Music Department will host the 6th annual Madrigal Dinner and Kingdom in the Kadena High School cafeteria Feb. 10, 11 and 12 from 6-8 p.m. This year's Valentine's Day themed performance is titled "Fools Fall in Love."

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteer track coaches needed
The Kadena High School Track program is looking for volunteer coaches for its Spring season. Experience is preferred. The season runs from Feb. 13 through May 25. Coaches should be able to attend at least two practices from 3-4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Track meets are usually Fridays from 3-7 p.m. and/or Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

The team needs a coach who can spend at least two days a week practicing with the team. Track workouts are held at Kadena High School and Ryukyu Middle School. Coaches are needed in all areas, but especially in shot-put, discus, high jump, long jump and hurdling.

Kadena Base Chapel AWANA
Kadena's Base Chapel Protestant Community needs volunteers to help with their AWANA program Sundays from 3- 5 p.m. This is a bible-based program for children between the ages of 3 years up to 12 years old. The program runs during the school year. A background check will be performed and you will be shown how to help in the age group you prefer.

Montgomery Gentry concert volunteers needed
The Shilling Community Center is looking for volunteers for the Montgomery Gentry concert at the hangar number 3, building 762. Volunteers are needed for set-up, tear down, and parking assistants. The set-up will tentatively take place Jan. 27-28 times to be announced. Tear down will take place after the show Jan. 28, and parking assistants will be needed to direct traffic Jan. 28 between 5-7 p.m. There will be a Shilling Community Center staff member at hangar #762, to sign in and direct the volunteers where to go.

Amelia Earhart Intermediate School tutoring opportunity
Amelia Earhart Intermediate School (3rd - 5th grade) is continuously looking for volunteer tutors for a tutoring program started this past Nov. Tutors are needed 8-8:40 a.m. and 3:10-4:10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Kadena Shogun dragon boat race team
Men and women interested in being a part of the Kadena Dragon Boat Race team for the May 5 Naha Dragon Boat Race are encouraged to attend a team meeting Feb. 3 at 3 p.m. in the Schilling Center Ballroom.

Team members must be Air Force active-duty, guard or reserve members, Department of Defense civilian employees or SOFA status family members at least 18 years old.

2011 Okinawa Marathon
Volunteers from groups, squadrons, private organizations, or as individuals are needed to provide water or cheer on runners at stations along the base route through Kadena during 2011 Okinawa Marathon, Feb. 20. Those interested are encouraged to attend a meeting Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. in the Schilling Ballroom. If you will volunteer as a group, you can send one representative to the meeting.
