The 20th-annual Boys and Girls Club of America Fine Art Exhibit, showcasing artwork by children and teenagers 5 to 18 years old, was held at the Officers' Club, Dec. 8.

More than 150 youth participated in the event hosted by the Kadena Youth and Teen Centers, giving them the chance to be creative and express themselves to their friends and family.

"The BGCA fine arts exhibit is designed to encourage creative interests in the arts by youth and to encourage them to participate in the fine arts, regardless of what medium it is, and regardless of what capacity it is," said Dion Bass, 18th Force Support Squadron's Kadena Teen Center chief. "Participation in the arts and fine arts is always important - it allows for creativity. It allows the kids to showcase who they are on the paper or on the canvas."

Awards were given to the participants for "best in show," regional winners and participation, but Lt. Col. Michael Borgert, 18th Force Support Squadron commander, said it wasn't just about receiving an award.

"It gives them a chance to show off a little, and it gives them a chance to try new things, find where their interests are and maybe find some hidden talents." he continued. "You don't have to be good at it. You just have to enjoy it."

Tiara Harris, 11, daughter of Tech. Sgt. Alvin Harris of the 18th Logistic Readiness Squadron, said she enjoyed being able to show off her talent by doing what she enjoys.

"I like painting and drawing," she added. "I'm glad we got to come out because I get to see other paintings and see what my friends have done too."
