One of the largest community relations events in Okinawa was held at Kadena Air Base this Saturday. The 9th Annual Kadena Special Olympics brought over 1,500 volunteers and 900 Special Olympics athletes and artists together for a day of friendship and competition.

The games kicked off on Risner Field at Kadena Air Base with remarks by 18th Wing Commander, Brig. Gen. Brett T. Williams, Vice Governor of Okinawa Prefecture, Zenki Nakazato and longtime Special Olympics supporter and movie actor, Tom Arnold.

According to Special Olympics Committee member, Kaori Shimabukuro, the event was a great success.

"This event highlighted the friendship and cooperation between servicemembers and the local community. Both volunteers and athletes seemed to gain a deeper appreciation for the other at the end of the event."

Throughout the day, athletes competed in a variety of events, including tennis, track and field, softball and Frisbee. Artists displayed their work in the Risner Gym and live bands, Eisa dancers and American dance performers entertained the crowds.

Ms. Shimabukuro said at the end of the games, when the athletes and families boarded the bus each athlete had a smile on his or her face.

"Every athlete was smiling and so proud to display their medals. The family members were also thrilled and said they can't wait to come back next year."
