Daily retreat, reveille raise procedure questions

Military members and civilians alike are expected to pay appropriate respects to the U.S. and Japanese flags during morning reveille and evening retreat.

Most base residents are aware of the proper actions to take but a few people may be unclear on the procedures or Kadena Air Base specific directions.

Air Force Manual 36-2203, Drill and Ceremonies, states that all personnel in uniform and outdoors must face the flag and salute during the raising and lowering of the flag.

On the first note of the national anthem or "To the Colors" all those in uniform not part of a formation should stand, face the flag or the sound of the music if the flag is not visible, and salute until the last note of the music is played.

Salutes are rendered during the playing of the Japanese national anthem as well.

Military people in civilian clothing outdoors during the raising or lowering of the flag must face the flag or music if the flag is not visible, stand at attention and place the right hand over the heart until the last note of the music is played.

All vehicles in motion should come to a stop at the first note of the music and the occupants should sit quietly until the music ends.

There is one Kadena-specific exception to these instructions. Airmen actively participating in physical training during morning reveille are not required to stop exercising.

Base residents can expect to hear reveille at 7 a.m. and retreat at 5 p.m.
