Okinawa’s AM Radio returns on-air Published Feb. 11, 2008 CAMP FOSTER -- American Forces Network's Surf 648-AM returns to broadcast Feb. 18 after being off-the-air for approximately one year. The AM radio station will restore Okinawa's favorite news, talk and sports-talk programming to the airwaves and will offer the audience an alternative to FM radio's music-based format. "The new AM program lineup will feature the old favorites, such as NPR (National Public Radio), political talk, and Sports Overnight America," said Master Sgt. Grady Fontana, detachment chief, AFN, "but the biggest benefit is that listeners now have more options; if they want music, they can tune into Wave 89-FM; if they want news and talk, then they can catch it on Surf 648-AM." Construction on the new AM antenna is in the final stages of testing, and pending any delays due to bad weather, will launch on Feb. 18 with NPR at 6 a.m., according to Fontana. The AM antenna, located at Camp Kinser, was damaged during routine maintenance in January 2007.
