Chatan Town residents walk to higher ground during a tsunami evacuation drill at Kadena Air Base, Japan, Sept. 7, 2024. During a real-world tsunami, Chatan Town residents are encouraged and permitted to travel through Kadena’s Gate 1 and exit through Gate 5, if this is the shortest route to higher ground. In April of this year, the gates were opened for a real tsunami warning where approximately 250 Chatan Town residents passed through the base to higher ground. This was the first tsunami evacuation drill since the re-signing of the base access agreement with Kadena Air Base on Aug. 21 of this year and the second iteration of the exercise since 2018.
