As members of the 18th Wing visibly prepared outgoing and incoming Airmen and aircraft for "war" during the Pacific Air Forces Operational Readiness Inspection, the 18th Communications Squadron was fighting a more inconspicuous adversary.

The squadron informed the wing, directed Airmen to increase their information assurance vigilance and re-educated them on IA safeguarding procedures when the base was hit with a phishing e-mail attempt scenario Aug. 18.

"A few people responded, and that's usually the case, especially when the information is big news, like a promotion list release," said Master Sgt. Melvin Holmes, 18th Wing IA and communications security manager. "But even one is too many."

To combat these attacks, the squadron employs several methods including system isolation, manual anti-virus scans, base-wide IA bulletins and education.

"Education is the biggest way we keep our information safe," Holmes said. "We remind everyone to keep their IA training current, make sure their e-mails are digitally signed and if they don't know where the e-mail is coming from, don't open it."

Protecting information isn't just something Airmen should be mindful of at work, but in all communications, said Staff Sgt. Quintin West, 18th Wing Enclave IA manager.

"Social networking sites are our biggest issue," he said. "Airmen should always remember to maintain operational security and be aware of what they're saying and who they're talking to."

Keeping vital information protected is what Airman 1st Class Jonathan A. Williams, 18th Wing IA technician, loves most about his job.

"Without us, the wing wouldn't be able complete its mission," he said.
