Kadena residents looking for a new exercise regimen can do so by signing up for Shogun Crossfit, which recently opened its doors at the Risner Fitness Complex.

Crossfit is a strength and conditioning brand that combines weightlifting, sprinting, gymnastics, power lifting, kettle bell training, plyometrics, rowing and medicine ball training. Individuals looking to improve their physical training scores may consider enrolling in this program.

"The fitness community has figured out that long slow distance running only contributes to more slow running, and a high-intensity workout is more beneficial for improving physical capacity, and I think the military is recognizing this,'' said 1st Lt. Ashley Jensen, 372nd Training Squadron Det. 215 commander and Shogun Crossfit's lead instructor.

Capt. Alison Hestermann, 18th Wing executive officer, who participated in a similar program on-island, dropped more than a minute off her PT test run time and saw it improved her overall score from 92 percent to 99 percent.

"I wouldn't have been able to improve my performance so drastically if it wasn't for Crossfit,'' she said.

Free Crossfit classes will be offered Monday through Friday at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. beginning July 25, but one of the requirements to enroll in the program involves signing up for a mandatory fundamentals course that introduces the program and its methodology.

Participants can enroll in the fundamentals program by signing up at the Risner Fitness Complex's front desk starting July 29. Enrollment classes will be offered every Sunday in August from noon until 4:30 p.m.
