Sayonara to Team Kadena

In the summer of 1945 the Unites States and Japan were engaged in a bitter war that was raging on the island of Okinawa. My grandfather, Adam Reich was a U.S. Marine, and one of the thousands of military members that came ashore around the first of April 1945. A few weeks later he would leave on a litter nearly dying from his wounds received in battle. It is remarkable that only two generations later I would be the commander of Kadena Air Base and instead of being engaged in battle with the Japanese, I and members of the U.S. military have partnered with our host nation to work on areas of mutual interest in the Pacfic region. I am very proud to have served in this capacity and know that the relationship between the United States and Japan is good and very strong.

It has been an honor to serve with the members of Team Kadena. You have and continue to show your understanding of the strategic importance of this base and your role in executing not only the 18th Wing mission, but also all the critical partner unit missions as well. Together, we make up Team Kadena, a formable force that has demonstrated capability and commitment in many ways with a recent example being OPERATION TOMODACHI.

After an epic 9.0 earthquake rocked mainland Japan, you sprang into action to deploy into the area with humanitarian capabilities and donations. The 353 Special Operations Group, and the 31st and 33rd Rescue Squadrons were able to help open up Sendai Airport, giving a critical supply hub for relief operations. Along with this, the 1st Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery, 733rd Air Mobility Squadron and others also provided tremendous assistance. Many military members, civilians and family volunteered time and gave monetary and supply donations. Overall, the Red Cross collected more than $100,000. What an amazing spirit of giving!

Your mission focus and community involvement is superb. I consistently receive accolades from senior U.S. and Japanese leaders praising your professionalism and community involvement. I've been impressed with the number of awards you have received, from Major Command, Air Force to local and national Japanese honors. All are a testament to your dedication and service.

Keep striving for improvement with constructive introspection and evaluation of your personal performance. You may be surprised at what you can truly accomplish and may even find ways you can improve.

I would also ask that you continue providing the faithful service and professionalism that you're known for around the world to Brig. Gen. Molloy and his family. Show them the true Team Kadena spirit.

So, as my change of command approaches I want to say thank you for all the support and dedication you've shown Cindy and me during our time here on Okinawa. It has been an honor to serve with you.
