Kadena Airmen earn wing's 20th AFOUA

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan --  For the twentieth time since 1959, the 18th Wing has been named a recipient of the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.

The wing received the award for its efforts during the period of Oct. 31, 2009 through Nov. 1, 2010.

"We have made truly significant contributions, which enhanced the Defense Department's and Air Force's abilities to perform peacetime and wartime contingency missions," said Brig. Gen. Ken Wilsbach, 18th Wing commander. "This twentieth award is the latest in a long line of achievements for the 18th Wing, and certainly won't be our last."

During the course of the award period, 18 WG Airmen were recognized with a dozen Air Force-level awards and over 40 major command awards. Wing Airmen also partnered with the militaries of 11 allied nations in 10 joint international exercises. In addition to enhancing Kadena's organic mission with numerous innovations and efficiencies, 18 WG Airmen deployed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, New Dawn and other contingencies around the globe.

"The men and women of the 18th Wing have worked with our Team Kadena partner units to excel in accomplishing our mission," the general said. "This award is a testament to the hard work, dedication and sacrifice of our Airmen--not only while here in Okinawa, but also while supporting overseas contingency operations worldwide."

The last time the wing received this award was 2007.

The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award was authorized by Department of the Air Force General Order 1, Jan. 6, 1954. It is awarded by the Secretary of the Air Force to numbered units that have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious service or outstanding achievement that clearly sets the unit above and apart from similar units.

Airmen who were assigned to the 18th Wing and its subordinate units are authorized to wear the AFOUA ribbon in accordance with Air Force instructions. The 18th Force Support Squadron's Awards and Decorations section will be updating personnel records to reflect the award. Airmen who were assigned to the 18th Wing during the award period, but now reside elsewhere, can update the award through their local Awards and Decorations sections.
