Kadena's next Phase 1 and Phase 2 local operational readiness exercise is scheduled for Jan. 18-22.

"LORE's are an opportunity for each unit within the Wing to get the training that they need to prepare their units and themselves for any real world situation that may arise," said Tech. Sgt. Russell Gray, superintendent of wing exercises. "We ask each unit to take these exercises seriously and train the way that they would expect to fight."

The upcoming LORE will be a fight-the-base exercise. Kadena will be graded on four major areas; positioning the forces, employment, sustaining the force and the ability to survive and operate.

During the LORE, members participating in the exercise will respond to base alarm conditions, don mission-oriented protective posture (MOPP) gear and respond to command directives. The training will focus on building and honing combat skills.

To ensure individuals know exactly what will be expected of them during an actual tasking, Sergeant Gray said Airmen should be reading over the in garrison expeditionary site plan, which defines the information necessary for making beddown, reception, and deployment planning decisions, as well as the installation deployment plan which explains the Air Force deployment process.

Sergeant Gray said, "In order to prepare for the upcoming LORE, we ask that everyone read the 18th Wing instruction 90-201, which breaks down how the exercise will run. I would also suggest that everyone get out their Airman's Manual and brush up on their Ability to Survive and Operate."

In addition to reviewing the Airman's Manual and ATSO, said Sergeant Gray, service members should also be checking their mobility bags by making sure their MOPP gear is properly labeled.

"The problem noticed most in the last fight-the-base exercise was the wear of the new chemical gear and the new M50 mask," said Sergeant Gray. "It is the most important part of our protection during a chemical or biological attack and it only works if worn correctly."

"If you are prepared for the LOREs," said Sergeant Gray, "then you will be ready for any real world tasking that arises."
