As you're out and about on Kadena next week you may notice some people around the base wearing masks and donning chemical protective gear. These masked Airmen aren't getting a head-start on Halloween, they're participating in a local operational readiness exercise (LORE).

Preparatory activities for the LORE will begin as early as Oct. 22, but the majority of exercise actions will start after the weekend and last throughout next week.

"Exercise Beverly High 11-1 is a fight-the-base scenario that will involve a large number of Kadena personnel, including tenant units and joint services," said Lt. Col. Timothy Reutiman, 18th Wing chief of exercises. "Areas to be evaluated include mobility, deployment, reception and bed down of forces, employment, and the ability to survive and operate (ATSO) under various conditions."

Those individuals participating in this exercise are encouraged to keep safety in mind while operating in this high-tempo training environment.

"We need to remember to look out for ourselves and those around us," said James Leffel, 18th Wing chief of safety. "Stay hydrated, stay alert, and accept risk at the appropriate level. While it is important to show a sense of urgency in conducting operations, it is equally important to ensure we are doing the tasks and making the decisions we have been trained for."
