Okuma reopens Saturday Published Sept. 9, 2010 By 18th Wing Public Affairs KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- Okuma reopens for business Saturday, Sept. 11. As of today, people can call 631-1850/1857 to make reservations for this coming weekend. The military recreation site was closed earlier this month after Typhoon Kompasu's 100 mph winds tore hundreds of trees limb from limb and temporarily knocked out power. Okuma's commander, Capt. Adam Vaccarezza thought the site would remain closed for at least two weeks, but thanks to more than 130 Kadena volunteers and support from the 18th Civil Engineer Squadron and 18th Force Support Squadron, it took a little more than week (including a holiday weekend). "It was a full team effort," he explained. "The 18th Wing and Okuma staff working in unison allowed us to open much sooner than we anticipated." The commander said while the Okuma staff continues to clean up the area, the site will be fully operational offering everything from jet skiing and parasailing to cabin rentals.
