An Airborne Warning and Control System E-3 Sentry aircraft is headed to the Republic of Korea to take part in Max Thunder bilateral air training exercise May 10-14.

The training opportunity aims to test aircrews' warfighting skills in realistic combat situations that combine both ROKAF and USAF flying and maintenance personnel. Approximately 37 Shogun Warriors from the 961st Airborne Air Control Squadron, 18th Security Forces Squadron, and 961st Aircraft Maintenance Unit will participate in an exercise equivalent to Red Flag in Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

"Getting training in a large force exercise provides a completely different look at a battle space," said 1st Lt. Stephanie Bradford, 961st Airborne Air Control Squadron. "It is important that we train to larger forces to ensure that we can operate safely with large numbers of aircraft."

The exercise currently involves nearly ten flying units and more than 60 U.S and ROKAF aircraft. U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons are teaming with ROKAF KF-16s, F-15Ks, F-4Es, and F-5s to enhance overall interoperability.

"This exercise provides the experience to fully integrate with our ROKAF partners," added the lieutenant. "We are able to mission plan right next to them, employ with them and ensure good working relations with our allies."
