Exactly 65 years ago this month, a battle started in which an estimated 250,000 people lost their lives here on Okinawa; it was one of the bloodiest battles of WWII.

While taking a tour of the battlegrounds last week, more than two dozen Kadena Airmen saw the facts and figures of the battle, and experienced the feeling of knowing that their presence on Okinawa did not come without a price.

During their tour they visited the Battle of Okinawa historical display at Camp Kinser, the Naval Underground Headquarters in Naha, and the Okinawa Peace Memorial Museum at Itoman City.

Kadena photographer Staff Sgt. Chris Hummel was on that tour and here are some of his photos. More photos can be found at the Kadena Flickr site at www.flickr.com/KadenaAirBase.
