Kadena Commander orders limited evacuation in response to tsunami warning Published Feb. 27, 2010 By 18th Wing Public Affairs KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- The 18th Wing Commander today ordered a limited evacuation of coastal areas on Okinawa for Kadena personnel as a result of a tsunami warning. The wave, up to six feet in height, is expected to hit Okinawa around 3:10 p.m. today and could affect the entire island, not just the Pacific side. The tsunami warning stems from yesterday's earthquake in Chile. As a result of the warning, Brig. Gen. Ken Wilsbach has issued the following direction: Kadena personnel who live in red areas (less than 30 feet above sea level) are ordered to evacuate to higher ground no later than 2 p.m. Kadena personnel who live in yellow areas (between 30 and 60 ft above sea level) are recommended to evacuate Personnel in red areas who live in high rise buildings above the 3rd floor may remain in place Personnel can start returning to their residences after 5 p.m. unless the Tsunami warning is extended or cancelled The sea condition will remain red; currents will be dangerous and personnel are urged to stay out of the water today even after the danger of the Tsunami has passed Stay tuned to AFN and www.kadena.af.mil for updates To check to see whether you live in the red or yellow areas, click here and scroll to through the pages of the document until you see the maps.
