In May of 1948, the Air Force Headquarters Command created an elite ceremonial unit comparable to what the other services had at the time, establishing the first base honor guard at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Since 1948 the team has been emphasizing the importance of military customs and courtesies, dress and appearance, and drill and ceremonies across the world.
