The Japan-America Air Force Goodwill Association recently presented its 2009 JAAGA Award to Master Sgt. Dennis O'Grady, 18th Equipment Maintenance Squadron inspection section chief. The award, given to the Airman whose extraordinary efforts contributed most to the enhancement of mutual understanding and friendship between the United States Air Force and the Japan Air Self Defense Force, was presented Feb. 5 during a ceremony held at Naha Air Base, Japan.

"I'm very happy to have received this award," said Sergeant O'Grady. "I've built a number of strong relationships in my time as the 18th Wing's bilateral coordinator to JASDF."

The list of Sergeant O'Grady's contributions is long, and includes spearheading the development of the first-ever USAF/JASDF Senior NCO mentorship program, assisting in the development of the JASDF female NCO exchange program, and leading more than 100 JASDF members on tours of Kadena Air Base in order to broaden their insight into the wing's global mission.

Brigadier General Ken Wilsbach, 18th Wing commander, framed the award in terms of its larger strategic implications.

"This year, we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our Mutual Security Treaty," said Brig. Gen. Wilsbach in his remarks at the ceremony. "This treaty is the basis for the alliance between America and Japan, which is the cornerstone of peace and security in this region. Our alliance is strong because of our common values and the personal and professional relationships our two countries have developed over the years. The relationships that we are developing now will pay huge dividends if we ever have to fly and fight together in the defense of Japan."

JASDF Master Sgt. Hiroki Kumasaka, Naha Rescue Squadron, was also recognized for his efforts.
