Team Kadena members wrapped up the 2009 Combined Federal Campaign Dec. 15, having donated nearly $400,000 to charity.

According to Senior Master Sgt. Carl A. Thompson, Kadena CFC community project officer, contributions from Kadena members will benefit programs right in their own backyard in addition to the 2,000 charities they could choose from.

"One hundred percent of the donations made to the Family Support and Youth Programs come directly back to the installation," he said. "These funds will be used for quality-of-life programs at the discretion of the wing commander."

Among the charities the CFC sponsors are those directly involved in disease prevention and medical research, environmental protection and furthering human rights. Of course, none of this could have been accomplished without the help of the unit CFC representatives.

"The CFC representatives were outstanding," Sergeant Thompson said. "Without their hard work and commitment, the campaign would not have been a success. They ensured 100 percent face-to-face contact and collected and distributed all the necessary materials. They were the main link between the CFC and the individuals contributing to the campaign."

Even with the impact the economy has had on people's wallets, Sergeant Thompson said he's still amazed at the generosity of Team Kadena members.

"We do this every year, and every year I'm amazed at how much we raise for the CFC," he said. "It would have been very easy for people to say 'I just don't have the money this year' but instead they reached down into their pockets and gave. Because of the selfless nature of our servicemen and women, millions of people across the globe will benefit."

Though Kadena's CFC campaign has come to a close this week, people can still donate online at http://www.cfcoverseas.org by creating an account and giving to an organization of their choice.
