A tenant unit reached beyond Kadena's gates to invite Asahi Ryo students from the Haebaru Town for a barbecue, games, and a better understanding of each other's culture on Kadena Air Base, Nov. 3.

The event hosted by Detachment 3, USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, at Rodriguez Park offered special-needs students the opportunity to experience American culture for the first time as they spent their "Culture Day" interacting with military members playing games and enjoying food.

"We really appreciate you coming to be with us," said Lt. Col. Jay Vietas, Det. 3 commander, "and we are very eager to know you, to know more about Okinawa, your culture and your school."

The Asahi Ryo is home to 20 special-needs students, 15 of which attend the prefecture special education schools. Mr. Tsugio Nagado, support section chief, thanked military members and their families for inviting them to the barbecue. This was the first time members of the Haebaru community were afforded the opportunity to interact with service members.

"It is a privilege to interact with the local community," said Master Sgt. Ben Winslow, Det. 3 USAF School of Aerospace Medicine superintendent. "Getting to know each other on a more personal level is vital in building trust and community strength."

More importantly, he added that the exchange allowed them as guests to show their appreciation to our host-nation neighbors.

According to Colonel Vietas, at the end of the day, the special needs students were delighted to make Culture Day a unique experience to remember.
