Kadena readies for Halloween Published Oct. 28, 2009 By 18th Wing Public Affairs KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- Halloween is Saturday and trick-or-treating hours will be from 6-8 p.m. in base housing. To ensure everyone has a safe trick-or-treating experience this weekend, the 18th Security Forces Squadron and 18th Wing safety office have several suggestions for parents and base personnel. Drivers are cautioned that the speed limit in base housing areas will lower to 15 kph to accommodate trick-or-treating hours. Security forces personnel will patrol base housing in vehicles and on foot to ensure safety. Parents should ensure that while out trick-or-treating, children travel in familiar areas and visit well-lit homes or apartment buildings with light-colored treat bags and flashlights or glow sticks. It is recommended that parents of children over the age of 12 plan a designated route and establish a return time. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible youth. The 733rd Air Mobility Squadron, AMC Passenger Terminal (Bldg. 3409), will provide free X-ray screening of all Halloween candy from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The AMC Passenger Terminal performs this courtesy service to ensure Halloween candy does not contain any contraband. Officials say that parents should consider pinning a slip of paper with the child's name, address and phone number inside a pocket in case the child gets separated from the group. Children and parents are reminded to think about safety when selecting costume accessories. Knives, swords and other accessories should be made from cardboard or other flexible materials. Volunteers are still need to assist with Operation Pumpkin Patrol. If interested, please send an e-mail to Capt. Barry Nichols (barry.nichols@kadena.af.mil) or Master Sgt. Clayton Watson (clayton.watson@kadena.af.mil) by noon Friday.
