Kadena residents will have a new place to eat this Friday after Army and Air Force Exchange Service officials announced today that the new Food Court within the Kadena Shopping Center will open nearly two weeks earlier than planned.

The new Food Court, which opens at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 23, replaces the Main Street Food Court across the street from the old Base Exchange. The Main Street Food Court will be permanently closed for business Oct. 22 until it is eventually demolished. The Burger King and Popeye's near the Fairchild Shoppette will remain open on Oct. 22 as will the venues at the Olympic Mall.

According to Shawn Dorcy, AAFES' Area Manager for Japan and General Manager for Okinawa, the new Food Court will add Burger King and Popeye's Chicken to the list of restaurants currently being relocated from Main Street. Those restaurants are: Manchu Wok, Charley's Steakery, Taco Bell, Anthony's Pizza, Subway and Baskin Robins.

The new Baskin Robbins and Mainstreet Expresso have already opened at the Kadena Shopping Center.

"This is an important enhancement to the Kadena Shopping Center complex and will greatly improve our ability to serve the Kadena community with nine food brands," Mr. Dorcy said.
