Base siren testing to begin

Kadena officials will start testing its base sirens Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at noon, in order to keep the sirens operational beginning this week.

The local climate wreaks havoc on the sirens, and the only way to keep them operational is to test them from time to time, to help prevent rust. By testing the siren, Kadena can keep the moving parts lubricated so they don't become seized from the salt in the air. Not conducting the siren test has increased maintenance on the system for civil engineers on base.

People need not be alarmed by the tri-weekly alarms, as they are simply tests.
