Commentary: Be Ready Published Nov. 19, 2008 By Master Sgt. James Hart 18th Maintenance Operations Squadron KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- Kadena Air Base, Japan -- Ready: to be prepared mentally or physically for some experience or action; prepared for immediate use. It is impossible to predict what may happen in the world each day. We experience change at a much faster pace compared to generations in the past. Serving in the military puts us at an advantage because we deal with change much more than the average American. As warriors in the profession of arms, it is vital that we remain ready to accomplish our nation's goals. This means we must constantly sharpen our swords in anticipation for the next battle. Maintaining and improving our efficiency in our areas of responsibility. Knowing our jobs and doing them right. Being a professional in the workplace and holding others accountable when they do not measure up to Air Force standards. In other words, we must be professionally ready for immediate use. Just as athletes who prepare for the Olympics put in the time and hard work to accomplish their goal of winning their event, we must put in the hard work and time to meet Air Force standards with the fitness program. This is a race that each of us must prepare for individually, but together, we can win as a team. This will ensure that we are physically ready for use. Being ready isn't just physical however. Take time to take care of your personal business. Nagging problems need attention. Make time to cultivate your relationships with family and friends. Educate yourself about finances. Find ways to relieve stress from your daily life. Actively participate in hobbies and activities you enjoy. Be ready to deploy and ensure your training is up to date as well as your subordinates. Be mentally ready for immediate use. When the hard times come, it is important to have someone or something to lean on. This can help us stand in times of trouble. Return to the well regularly for spiritual renewal. A Chaplain, mental health, or family support center counselor can help you prepare to be mentally and spiritually ready. In order to support and defend our nation against all enemies, we must be ready for immediate use. As the best air and space force the world has ever seen, our country expects nothing less.
