The Combined Federal Campaign for the 18th Wing kicked off Oct. 1 with a 5K fun run at the Risner Fitness Center.

More than 110 runners endured the rain to take part in the inaugural event which raised $1,412 toward the base's goal of $500,000.

The CFC is a campaign that allows federal workers to contribute to over 2,000 charities. It was established in the 1960's to create a once-a-year opportunity to solicit government workers for charitable donations to worthy causes.

There are three goals for the CFC campaign this year: 100 percent contact, a $500,000 overall donation to the campaign and a $50,000 donation to the Family Support and Youth Programs offices.

"This is a very big thing for us because every dollar contributed to FSYP comes back to Kadena," said Senior Master Sgt. David Duncan, assistant community area project officer. "If folks are unsure what charity to give to, FSYP is a great way to help our people."

Although the thought of sifting through the book of charities may seem daunting, Maj. Jeremy Fenceroy, Kadena CFC primary community area project officer offers an easier alternative.

"People can go on the CFC Web site at www.cfcoverseas.org and use the search engine to find a suitable charity," he said. "Contributors can enter keywords into the search box for a type of charity they care about such as animal preservation or medical research."

The CFC Web site also offers the option to make online contributions and contributions via a credit card.

Kadena's CFC goal last year was $475,000. By the end of the campaign period, Kadena Airmen had raised $530,000.

In addition to individual donations, units can also support the campaign by hosting CFC fundraisers.

Major Fenceroy and Sergeant Duncan are looking for CFC success stories of Kadena members who benefitted from the program.
