The Hershey Temporary Lodging Facility is currently undergoing a one-year renovation, limiting lodging availability for inbound and outbound travelers.

The closure of the Hershey TLF has cut the Shogun Inn's family lodging capability in half, but the lodge continues to accomodate many guests possible. Once current renovations are completed, the facility will reopen on February 2009.

"The end result of this renovation will be the most comfortable environment for families making a permanent change of station to and from Kadena," said Matthew Leichty, 18th Force Support Squadron, lodging manager.

Currently the inn provides two buildings capable of holding 64 one-bed units for families. Additionally, there are 653 bedrooms located in the Shogun Inn building.

"We are doing what we can to accommodate our guests," said Mr. Leichty.

A soft renovation of the carpets, furniture and curtains was completed last year. The current renovation covers structural areas such as plumbing, heating, air conditioning, windows, bathrooms and ventilation.

"We consider this $4 million renovation a great investment to help improve the quality of life for the Kadena community," said Col. MaryDarlene Morgan, 18th FSS commander.

While the Hershey TLF is being renovated, large or small families have several lodging options, said Mr. Leichty.

Families with more than one child will receive a non-availability slip to seek lodging off base and are able to book two rooms as long as there is an adult in each room.

"Keep in mind, off base hotel costs are much higher and may not always be covered under PCS costs," said Mr. Leichty.

Always check with the travel pay professionals and know your limits. If you are leaving Kadena in the next several months and have questions about lodging availability, contact the Shogun Inn reservation office at 632-1100.
