Kadena Air Base teenagers got a glimpse of the possibilities this summer during the Teen Summer Expo held June 7 in the Rocker NCO club.

More than 100 teens ages 12-18 received information from base agencies about summer jobs, volunteer opportunities and recreation.

"The Teen Summer Expo's purpose was to educate teenagers on their options this summer," said Capt. Rose Englebert, 18th Wing Equal Opportunity director.

The expo also introduced teenagers to on-base helping agencies, as well as options for an enjoyable and productive summer, said Captain Englebert.

Participating agencies included the Health and Wellness Center, mental health, family advocacy, youth programs, chapel, sexual assault response coordinator, Defense Commissary Agency, and the Military Equal Opportunity Office. Airmen of the 18th Security Forces Squadron also had a booth at the expo and briefed attendees on topics pertaining to substance abuse and law enforcement violations.

Teenagers involved in the type of activities and programs highlighted during the expo are more likely to be successful now and in the future, said Captain Englebert.

"I thought it was really good for teens to know what's available to them," said Master Sgt. Mike Sneed, 31st Rescue Squadron, NCO-in-charge of radio maintenance. "And also what kind of programs are available for them in the summer time and year-round as well."

Oral Arrington, 18th Force Support Squadron youth programs director, said participating organizations offer great programs. Some agencies, such as the base commissary offer scholarships for volunteering.

Volunteering is also a good way for youth to gain valuable skills, said Mr. Arrington. These skills can be included in future resumes or college applications.

"It can only help them grow and be better people," he said. "It gives them a little exposure to what's out there waiting for them when they decide to go into the job market."
