New track now open Published April 3, 2008 By Tech. Sgt. Rey Ramon 18th Wing Public Affairs KADENA AB, Japan -- The Risner Fitness Center running track opened Thursday after a $375,000 renovation which began in December to repair wear and tear problems. "The track was closed because of the pot holes, broken gravel and the normal wear and tear that rendered it unsafe for runners," said TSgt. Rayshawnda Davis, 18th Services Squadron interim athletic director. With the track's anticipated revitalization now complete, the Kadena Air Base community can continue the "fit to fight" tradition with less congestion around base running areas. "I have not done PT for months and I need to get back in shape and gauge where I'm at," said Spc. David Southards, 1-1 Air Defense Artillery Battalion, Patriot Missile operator, who recently came off a medical profile. The new track will be a welcome change for people who have problems running on asphalt. "This all-weather pavement track made of foam will help Airman with running problems," said Sergeant Davis. "It helps reduce the strain and pressure on the knees and joints of the body while running." This will be beneficial for someone coming out of a profile, added Specialist Southards. The track has been built to withstand harsh weather conditions. Any rainfall will not linger on the track, but should run off to the inner field keeping it from degrading. "The track is suppose to last 10 to 12 years if taken care of properly," said Sergeant Davis. Military members and dependents should be aware of track rules. Bicycles, strollers, any wheel devices or cleats are not allowed on the track because that will void the warranty, said the sergeant. "If misused, we'll be back to where we were with the old track that lasted around two to three years," said Sergeant Davis. The 1/4 mile Risner running track has been used by thousands since it was built in 1987.
