KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- Leaders from the 18th Security Forces Squadron met with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s 51st Infantry Regiment command team for a tabletop exercise at Kadena Air Base, Oct. 24, 2025.
The exercise focused on developing and refining joint defense strategies to protect Okinawa and key regional bases in a contested environment. Participants worked through realistic scenarios designed to improve coordination, communication, logistics and standard operating procedures under pressure.
“This exercise provided an opportunity to evaluate our readiness for future operational contingencies and refine our approach in a dynamic environment,” said Senior Master Sgt. John Haines, 18th SFS logistics and readiness superintendent.
Regular training with JGSDF partners and other Japanese forces is essential to maintaining a unified and capable defense posture across the island. Engagements like this enhance interoperability and ensure both forces can integrate seamlessly when it matters most.
“These exercises allow us to understand each other’s operational capabilities, tactics, and limitations, which strengthens our ability to work together in real-world scenarios,” said Haines.
Along with the tabletop training, 18th SFS hosted the JGSDF team for a tour of the squadron’s facilities and security assets. The visit concluded with a traditional American barbecue lunch, providing time to connect and strengthen personal relationships outside of the training environment.
“Offering hospitality beyond the training itself is an important part of partnership,” said Haines. “Moments like sharing a meal or enjoying a tour together help build trust and understanding on a personal level, which directly translates into stronger teamwork during real-world operations.”
The engagement highlighted the importance of strengthening both professional cooperation and personal relationships between U.S. and Japanese forces. Through combining training, communication, and shared experiences, the two teams reinforced their commitment to working together in defense of Okinawa and maintaining stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
