Final Airman's body recovered

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan --  Just hours after beginning their third day of searching Oct. 8, a combined Japanese-U.S. Air Force rescue team recovered the body of the final Airman who had been swept out to sea on Oct. 5.

The Airman was discovered in the water a few miles south from where the three Airmen were last spotted on the northwest coast of Okinawa.

The release of the Airman's identity is being withheld pending the next-of-kin notification.

On Oct. 5, the body of Senior Master Sgt. James Swartz was recovered by the Japan Coast Guard. On Oct. 7, the body of a second Airman, whose identity is also being withheld, was discovered.

A dignified transfer ceremony was held on Kadena on Oct. 8, and the three Airmen's remains were flown off of Okinawa via military aircraft.

All three Airmen were temporarily assigned to Kadena Air Base from Robins Air Force Base, Ga.

"We continue to grieve with the family, friends and fellow Airmen of those lost in this tragedy," said Col. Thomas Torkelson, vice commander of the 18th Wing. "And we will never leave an Airman behind."


最後の空軍兵の遺体を回収

仮訳：捜索活動の3日目に当たる10月8日、アメリカ空軍と日本の捜索隊は、10月5日に高波にさらわれ行方不明になっていた最期の空軍兵を回収した。

空軍兵は、3人の空軍兵が最期に見かけられた沖縄本島の北西海岸から、南側数マイルの海中で発見された。

親族への連絡が完了するまで、この空軍兵に関する情報は公開されない。

10月5日、ジェイムズ・ショルツ上級曹長の遺体が、海上保安庁により回収されていた。10月7日には、同じく情報が公表されていない2人目の空軍兵の遺体が発見されていた。

10月8日、移送式が嘉手納基地にて厳かに行われ、空軍兵3人の遺体は米軍機により沖縄を離れた。

空軍兵3人はロビンス空軍基地から嘉手納基地に一時的に所属していた。

第18航空団副司令官トーマス・トーケルソン大佐は、「この悲劇で失われた空軍兵の死を、彼らの家族、友人、そして同僚と共に悼んでいます」と述べ、「私達は、決して一人の空軍兵も置き去りにすることはない」と、話した。
