Okinawan families welcome their ancestors during Obon
Sousei Yamakawa, owner of the house, burns uchikabi, which is the paper spirit money during the last day of Obon at Yomitan village, Japan, Aug. 10, 2014. In Okinawa, Obon runs throughout July 13-15 on the old lunar calendar, which means this year it falls throughout Aug. 8-10. The three days of Obon are called Unke, known as the welcoming day; Nakabi, which is dedicated to visiting relative's homes; and Ukui, which is dedicated to sending the ancestral spirits back to the other world.
