嘉手納基地第１８医療群所属の空軍兵士が新型コロナウイルスの検査を実施している様子（２０２０年３月２０日撮影）。米疾病対策センターが公表した最新の指針を基に、第１８医療群は検査件数を増やした。検査を受けた者(PUI)は、衛生担当官の指示を受けて自宅待機し、家族へ感染しないための助言を受ける。担当官は検査対象者に聞き取りを行い、濃厚接触者リストを作成する。担当官は、濃厚接触者と疑われる者に連絡し、１４日間の移動制限を指示する。濃厚接触者とは、検査対象者の同居人、対象者を看護した人、物理的な接触があった人、食器類を共用した人、又は近距離で長時間会話をした人などを指す。検査結果が判明するまで、通常２～５日を要する。結果が陰性の場合、移動制限は解除される。陽性の場合、検査対象者は治癒したと診断されるまで移動制限が続き、濃厚接触者は引き続き１４日間の移動制限を受ける。また、濃厚接触者と疑われる者と接触した人は、移動制限は受けないものの、十分な対人距離を保つことが求められる。（米空軍写真撮影：レット・イズベル上等兵、マンディー・フォスター１等兵）
