18th MUNS helps locals celebrate Shimi
Okinawans work to clean the exterior of their family tomb in preparation for Shimi on Kadena Air Base, Japan, April 6, 2014. Shimi is an annual celebration on Okinawa, during which family tombs and the surrounding areas are cleaned before extended family members gather to pray and offer food to their deceased loved ones. 18th MUNS helps locals celebrate Shimi
Local citizens gather around their family tomb after praying in observance of Shimi in the Munitions Storage Area on Kadena Air Base, Japan, April 6, 2014. During Shimi, one of the only times locals can visit tombs located in the restricted area, Okinawans clear overgrown plants from the area surrounding their tomb before gathering extended family members to pray, eat and enjoy each other’s company.
