The Sweetheart of Okinawa: Kadena’s Corsair squadrons

VMF-312 "Checkerboarders" were the first allied fighter squadron to operate from Kadena. The squadron landed on Kadena April 9, 1945, and began operations three days later. By the end of the war VMF-312 had claimed 60-1/2 air to air victories. (DoD photo)
