Shogun-Okinawan veterans

An Okinawan gazes at a monument during his visit to the war-related sites on Kadena Air Base, Japan July 23. Nearly 90 visitors ages 60-90 years old from the Okinawa Prefectural Disabled Veterans Association visited the Peace Garden near the Youth Center and an old aircraft hanger near Gate 3. This group is very unique as they served in the Imperial Japanese Army during the Battle of Okinawa, sustained injuries in the war, and have been receiving military pensions from the Government of Japan. They were not directly deployed to Okinawa during the war, but drafted from here to serve in the Army. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Rey Ramon)
