Honoring Ancestors: Tradition of Shimi in Okinawa

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 18th Munitions Squadron clear overgrown vegetation at a tomb in preparation for Shimi at Kadena Air Base, Japan, April 9, 2025. Airmen with the 18th MUNS cleaned the tombs for Okinawan families, giving them more time to pay their respects during Shimi, a grave-sweeping festival during weekends in April where local people gather and eat food in courtyards while paying respects at their family’s tombs.
