The men and women of Kadena Air Base showed their generosity by donating a total of $455,000 to charity as part of the 2008 Combined Federal Campaign, which wrapped up here Dec. 10.

Senior Master Sgt. David Duncan, Kadena CFC primary community area project officer, said although the end total fell short of the $500,000 goal, he was impressed with the amount raised.

"Considering today's economic times, people were still opening up their wallets and donating," said Sergeant Duncan. "Every little bit helped." He added that the base raised more than half of Pacific Command's Air Force total donations.

Sergeant Duncan attributes a large part of the campaign success to those who volunteered as CFC unit representatives.

"The unit reps made contact [with coworkers] and collected donations every week," Sergeant Duncan said. "It's a huge amount of time out of someone's day to run this program within a unit. We raised $455,000 as a result of their hard work. They did a fantastic job."

Through the CFC program, donations will go toward helping more than 2,000 charities including a special Kadena program called Family Support and Youth Programs.

"This is a very big thing for us because every dollar contributed to FSYP comes back to Kadena and helps with quality of life programs," said Sergeant Duncan. "FSYP is a great way to help our people."

Sergeant Duncan said he is proud of what Kadena accomplished with the campaign.

"It's not easy asking coworkers for donations, but our people were very charitable," he said. "I would like to thank everybody for their help in making this campaign a huge success."
