Traffic delays possible during Gate 3 construction

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- Kadena drivers can expect some traffic congestion and delays at Gate 3 for approximately six weeks starting Oct. 1 due to construction work.

Contract workers will be installing final denial barriers in the area.

"The barriers are the final defense if somebody decides to try and run the gates," said Bryan Cawthorne, 718th Civil Engineer Squadron construction management deputy. "They are used to increase the security of the base and all the assets." Final denial barriers are already installed at gates 1, 2 and 5.

During the construction project, Molland Street, which exits onto Douglas Boulevard, will be closed due to road pavement cut work.

Traffic coming in and out of Gate 3 will have to use the outbound lanes, which will be marked with orange barriers and cones.

"Drivers should expect to see some congestion during the construction work, so we recommend people use an alternate gate if possible," said Tech. Sgt. Matt Howard, 18th Security Forces Squadron NCO in charge of police services.
