AFAF highlight: Air Force Village Published April 23, 2013 By Sarah Olaciregui 66th Air Base Group Public Affairs HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- By the end of the fourth week of fundraising, Airmen at Kadena Air Base, Japan, have raised $122,519.15 for the Air Force Assistance Fund, surpassing their goal of $118,534. Though Kadena Airmen have reached their AFAF goal, they can continue to donate until May 3. There are four main charities supported by the AFAF. This week's spotlight is the Air Force Village. Charity Spotlight: Air Force Village Air Force Village was established in 1964 by members of the Air Force Officers' Wives' Club and Air Force leaders who wanted to offer housing and financial assistance to retired Air Force officers' widows in need. Today, Air Force Village continues to care for widowed spouses who need financial assistance and provide for their health care need, according to the website www.afvillages.org. Air Force Village is located San Antonio. The first, Air Force Village I, has home and apartment options. The second AFVF location, Air Force Village II, has tower apartments, cottages and ranch-style homes. Air Force Village is also a continuing care retirement community. Residents find military retirement living with an emphasis on individual well-being. The community provides on-site wellness clinics and fitness centers. Medical directors and trained staff offer healthcare on site should residents find they need routine medical care, assisted living, rehabilitation therapy, home health, skilled nursing or Alzheimer's/dementia care. Finally, Air Force Village addresses end-of-life care through Hospice Care for Heroes, offering comprehensive services to patients and their families. In addition, Air Force Village residents enjoy the benefits of being located near Lackland AFB, Texas, and its medical facilities. Air Force Village prides itself in never turning away a qualified widow because she is unable to pay, according to the organization's bylaws.
