The 18th Dental Squadron has acquired a new x-ray unit that allows providers to view high-resolution images of a patient's teeth, roots and jaws in 3-D.

"Cone Beam Computer Technology is the state-of-the-art in digital imaging technology. It will be of great benefit in providing better-quality detail to many areas of dentistry, like implant dentistry, oral surgery, orthodontics, and more," said Maj. Brady Thomson, 18th Dental Squadron interim support flight commander. "Beyond the many uses for dentistry in our Kadena clinic, this machine, being the island's first, has the potential to benefit tri-service dental and medical patients island wide."

Cone Beam CT scans, similar to conventional CT, offer visibility of the smallest anatomical detail superior to conventional dental radiographs. the ability to view and manipulate images of patients in 3-D is unique to CBCT.

"Although it is not needed for every patient to receive CBCT 3-D x-rays, this new technology is ideal for visualizing very small boney structures in many instances. All this detail is delivered at a radiation dose that is up to 90 percent less than conventional CT units, and will enhance the safety operations for our patients," said Maj. Corey Anderson, 18th DS periodontist and dental clinic safety officer.

"In addition, the Cone Beam CT can provide clarity for complex cases, as well as during emergency situations. Patients will benefit from the greater detail and three-dimensional capabilities," said Thomson.

Military providers interested in utilizing this technology or requesting further information can reach the Kadena dental clinic between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. by dialing 630-4902.
