Battle of Iwo Jima approaches 70
A Japanese coastal ship-mounted gun is emplaced at the base of Mount Suribachi on Iwo To, Japan. Two days preceding the battle of Iwo Jima, a Japanese crew fired a similar gun at an approaching U.S. ship, causing a chain reaction of preemptive strikes. President Woodrow Wilson first commemorated Nov. 11 as Armistice Day in 1919 to honor the veterans of World War I. The day was later changed to Veterans Day in 1954 by President Dwight D.
