Kadena Honor Guard members salute the flag during the Flag Day ceremony on Kadena Air Base, Japan, June 14, 2013. The ceremony included a decommissioning of the American Flag by honor guard personnel and was retired, along with other flags toward the end of the event. Recently retired flags are then destroyed according to the United States Flag Code which states, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
