18th MUNS helps locals celebrate Shimi

Local citizens gather around their family tomb after praying in observance of Shimi in the Munitions Storage Area on Kadena Air Base, Japan, April 6, 2014. During Shimi, one of the only times locals can visit tombs located in the restricted area, Okinawans clear overgrown plants from the area surrounding their tomb before gathering extended family members to pray, eat and enjoy each other’s company. About 100 Airmen volunteered to escort more than 400 visiting locals this year. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Zade C. Vadnais)
